Fittingly for the approaching Christmas, the building permit for the installation of congregation rooms in the listed St. John's Evangelist Church in Berlin-Mitte was granted.
Roland Wolff presented the document to the bishop in charge of the Antiochian Orthodox Metropolis of Germany, Dr. Hanna Haikal, in a small, solemn ceremony on the 4th of Advent. In the future, the Orthodox St. George's parish will have its spiritual and social center in the church, which was completed in 1900 according to a design by Max Spitta. For this purpose, parish rooms will be built into the church interior according to the design by wolff:architekten.
A large number of the parishioners are Syrian refugees. Bishop Haikal, who comes from Lebanon, has started an initiative through which students in need at Syrian universities are supported directly by the Orthodox Church. The reconstruction of the country can only succeed if young, well-educated people actively promote it. Starting next year, the office wolff:architekten supports this initiative and takes over direct student sponsorships in Damascus and Latakia.
